Cornwall is a city located in Ontario, Canada. It stands on the banks of the river of St. Lawrence and Highway 401 that runs close to the border with Quebec province. It is only 100 km far from the capital of Canada, Ottawa city. The population of Cornwall is a little more than 45 000 (according to 2002 information), it is located in the Eastern time zone. The official language in the city is English. Cornwall History The city was founded in 1784, when the first settlers from New York came to the territory of the St. Lawrence banks. These were United Empire Loyalists who wanted to save from American Revolution. The city first name was New Johnstown but then renamed to Cornwall in honour of Prince George, the Duke of Cornwall. A few small villages were created near Cornwall, but in 1958 they were flooded when the St. Lawrence Seaway was constructed.

Now those villages are famous as the Lost Villages. Education Establishments There are a lot of different education centres in Cornwall, including twenty five elementary schools, a few secondary schools and post-secondary institutions. The last ones include St. Lawrence College, The University of Ottawa, and the NavCanada Training Institute. Also there is the St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences. Economical Richness By the 60s years of the last century Cornwall was a famous center of cotton industry that fell into decay. The city was among the first in Canada that had electricity. Cornwall hosted a powerful paper mill of Dotmar Company, located in Quebec. It brought to the region more than 1500 of workplaces, but in 2006 the workforce was reduced to 400 and soon the mill as totally closed. The main employer in the city today is Supply Chain Management providing about 1000 workplaces. The company is responsible for Wal-Mart distribution in the Eastern Canada. Also there is an old jail located in Cornwall, one of the oldest in Canada. It was restored and now it attracts many tourists from all over Canada.
